A safe space at school: what does a school counsellor really do?
School counselling isn't only for students in serious trouble. What a school counsellor does, and why trust matters.

When students hear the word “counselling,” they may sometimes think it is only for someone who is facing a serious problem or has done something wrong. In reality, school counselling can be a space for many different experiences. A student may want to talk because they are feeling stressed, struggling with friendships, finding it difficult to adjust, worried about their studies, or simply unsure about how they are feeling.
A school counsellor is there to listen and support students through these experiences. They do not take the place of parents or teachers, and their role is not to judge, punish or label a student.
More than just solving problems
Counselling gives students an opportunity to speak openly with a trained professional in a supportive environment. Sometimes a student may already know what is bothering them. At other times, they may only know that something does not feel right. They do not need to have everything figured out before they ask to speak with a counsellor.
The counsellor can help the student understand what they are experiencing, express their thoughts and feelings, and explore appropriate ways of dealing with challenges. The goal is not to give quick answers to every problem, but to help the student feel heard and supported.
School counselling can also support students who are going through changes or difficult situations in their lives. When needed, the counsellor may work with parents, teachers or other professionals so that the student receives appropriate support.
A space built on trust
For counselling to be helpful, students need to feel that they can speak without immediately being judged. Privacy and confidentiality are important parts of professional counselling. At the same time, there are situations involving safety or safeguarding where information may need to be shared with the appropriate people to protect the student.
A school counsellor is therefore not simply someone students meet when there is a problem. They can be part of a wider school environment that encourages students to talk, seek support and take care of their wellbeing.
A safe school is not one where students never struggle. It is one where students know that when they do struggle, they do not have to face it alone.
At RKS Mental Health & Wellness Center, we believe that every student deserves access to a safe, respectful and supportive space where they can be heard.
